Twice now, in Dylan's last two radio shows, he's played a song by Jerry
Lee Lewis playing Iago in a performance of Othello. When you hear Jerry
interacting with the other actors, his voice seems miles above the rest
of the cast. And the songs are great.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of these songs? The internet
seems silent on the subject of any soundtrack album for this version of
Othello.

I've often wondered about how Dylan feels about Jerry Lee Lewis, because
I feel the two have a lot in common, being two of the greatest
performers still alive today.

This was a rock opera called "Catch My Soul," written and produced by
Jack Good in LA in 1968, and starring Richie Havens as Othello. A
Jerry Lee fan describes opening night:

"In '68 I flew to Los Angeles to see Jerry perform in "Catch My Soul"
- a rocked up version of Shakespeare's Othello written by Jack Good.

"By this time Jerry had been off the Sun label for five years and
despite a prodigious output he had failed to get a hit on his new
label Mercury and his contract was not going to be renewed. Cecil was
talking about trying to get RCA interested.

"The opening night of "Catch My Soul" was a great success and Burt
Bacharach, Andy Williams, Zsa Gabor and Tom Jones all queued up,
trying to get inside the dressing room to congratulate Jerry.

"The critics loved the show and it was about to go to New York when
Jerry had an unexpected country hit with "Another Place Another Time".
This led to Smash renewing his recording contract.

"Jerry never got to do Shakespeare on Broadway but he did have great
success throughout the seventies."

So far as I know, there was never a recording of the original live
theater performances, though a film version in 1974 did generate a
soundtrack album. Unfortunately, however, Jerry Lee wasn't in the film
version.

Thanks khematite for the info. But someone must have recorded the show
with Jerry Lee. How else would Bob be able to play the songs on his
radio show?

Impeccable logic:

Available on CD, but it'll set you back $80.00 at:

Also seems to be downloadable as a torrent, if you browse around here
and there.

Once again, many thanks. The Killer's Private Stash looks like a
wonderful cd for a Jerry Lee collector like myself. Rather than pay $80,
though, I will keep looking for a cheaper way to get it. Maybe a trip to
Holland, where the cd came from.
