Loved his music! R.I.P.
Hit me out of the blue, was just looking at a documentary on Gene
Hackman last night so he was in my mindset. Those two and Karen Black
were splendid in Cisco Pike.
Loved Kris in “Blume in love”, so easy going and laid back…
I actually never got around to seeing that one, will soon.

I actually haven't seen that movie.
Definitely one for me to watch out for.

Are you reading and posting on NovaBBS, Jordy? If so, take a look at the
headers (the 5 lines above the post). The second one, "newsgroups",
controls where your message gets posted. Notice how they appear, eg.

alt.arts.poetry.comments,rec.arts.poems

(name or group written in full in lower case, just a comma (no spaces)
between groups).

If you're making a new post, the default there will be the group you're
posting from; so you have to write in the other groups there yourself.
You can write in up to 5 groups and I think (though I haven't tested it)
they all have to be groups NovaBBS carries. Otherwise, the message won't
post and you'll get a warning; just edit the line and try posting again,
and it should work.

As an added note, if you post to one group, then post to another group
the same content, it will not work. You will see the second post on this
site (novabbs), but it will not propagate across Usenet.

It's important to post to both groups at the same time, using the method
described by George above.

I think it's been working for me.
What happens if you make the same post separately into another group,
within a specific period of time, it will appear here just fine, but it
will not travel to the rest of Usenet.

This is because my backend Usenet server, i2pn2.org, will block it.

An example is here:
From: <someone in aapc>
Newsgroups: rec.arts.poems
Subject: <the subject>
Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2024 19:03:01 +0000

The above post goes fine into rec.arts.poems, but the same article was
attempted to be posted into aapc, and it failed. From my logs:

MULTIPOST DETECTED:
Sender: <same person in aapc>
Subject: <the same subject>
Duplicates: <the message-id of the article above>
REJECTING: <***@www.novabbs.com>

The article will appear on novabbs, but it won't go anywhere else.

That would've been me. I've been multiposting all my PPB: threads to
aapc and RAP for years -- first to keep the trolls on RAP off the
threads on aapc (when RAP was infested) and later to keep the trolls on
aapc off the threads on RAP (when their trolls moved into aapc). I never
posted the same pose enough to come near the spam threshold, but I can
understand why (because of the threshold) you want to discourage
multiposting.

Since most of the trolls seem to have left us when google groups stopped
supporting usenet, it looks safe to start crossposting again. So I'll do
that with today's PPB post.

Thanks as always for your information.

Okay, interesting facts worth remembering.

So let me see if I get all this:

It's okay to legitimately crosspost, but not to double post?

That is correct. Multiposting is prohibited at my backend server level.

Current limits in the web interface are maximum 3 groups in a new
crosspost, and maximun 6 groups in a reply. The backend server will
reject any article from anywhere that exceeds 6 groups.

It's really an anti-spam feature, but it also affects the average user
who chooses multiposting over crossposting.

One thing you may or may not be aware, but for users using a Newsreader,
crossposted articles will automatically be marked read in every group
they're in once you read one copy. Multiposted articles will not, so you
end up thinking there is a new article, but you've already read it. It's
kind of irritating.

Will give it a try, thanks George 🙏
As an added note, if you post to one group, then post to another group
the same content, it will not work. You will see the second post on this
site (novabbs), but it will not propagate across Usenet.
It's important to post to both groups at the same time, using the method
described by George above.
Thanks for the information, I didn't know that.

If you try to crosspost to too many newsgroups you'll also get a message
saying that you're over the limit.

If you look on the very top of the page, in the grey area, it says "mail
files register ect", there is also one that says groups, click on that
and it will show you all the groups supported by this site. hope that
helps

That helps a lot, even for people like me who are already cross-posting.
One can just go down the list, and copy-and-paste the other group(s)
rather than typing it (them) in, meaning there's no risk of making a
typo.

Thanks for the tip.
