I have mainly been a lurker over the past few years but since it seems
that recent rmd posters are not The Sopranos' fans because this tidbit
was not noted on rmd.

I only was a Soprano fan during the first two seasons and only
occasionally caught an episode the last few years. However, I did see
the series' ender and appreciated the Dylan remark by Tony's son (I
don't remember his name): He's listening to the BIABH CD e.g. It's
Alright Ma and says (I paraphrase)" Its amazing - this was written so
long ago but it seems to taking about whats going on today."

Fuckin' A - this is a major genius of Bob Dylan's song writing.

Over the years, The Soprano's writers have on several times shown an
appreciation of Dylan's talent and on the last show commented on the
"timelessness" of Dylan's art.

Hi Dennis. I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing. I remember they
played Gotta Serve Somebody on the radio on one episode, and also
heard that Bob did this song Return To Me, and they played that, too.
But I'm guessing EVERYBODY here already knows this, and I'm just
blabbering now.

I think it's real cool that Bob Dylan is associated with the
Soprano's, the way they steal and run illegal bussineses to make money
and the way they whack people and all that.

Yeah, there were several Bob references in the last few episodes. The
next-to-last show was maybe even better than the finale.

The gynecologists must have loved it.
"You don't need a gynecologist to know which way the wind blows,"
said Tony to Dr. Melfi. There was a lot more discussion about this
over at Dylan Pool than there was here.

Darnit, you know, I really really like the Sopranos (when I'm in the

The It's Alright Ma scene was mentioned in rmd, as was the gynecologist
scene, but the sad fact is, the music on that last episode was all Journey.

I fortunately don't remember Journey, and I wasn't paying attention to
Journey's Don't Stop Believin' when Tony was playing it as he ate his
onion rings, and when my tv blanked out, I really forgot the music. But
now that the Journey song is seen as the key to the whole ending, it's
pretty clear that the Sopranos' last episode won't be remembered for the
Dylan music.

I wonder if Bob likes onion rings...I sure do. But they're so bad for
you. I mean, that didn't even occur to me until just now when I
pictured Bob eating them... :/

Actually, no, the music in the last scene was all Journey.
There was the It's Alright, Ma scene when Anthony Jr. and his girlfriend
burnt up Tony Jr.'s SUV. I thought it quite hilarious the way Dylan's voice
slowed, slurred and garbled out of existence as Tony Jr. once again screwed
up--so to speak. He was out to screw the girl, but the SUV caught fire
instead. Oh well.

Neither should it be. The show was never about Dylan music.

What are the chances that Chase (or Van Zandt) was playing with the
line from Modern Times: "Sooner or later, you too shall burn"? I know
it's a stretch, but that did flash through my mind at the time.

Nope. Only in the final scene.

The show really demonstrates, to use a tired phrase, the banality of
evil. What could be more fittingly banal than to have a Journey song
playing as Tony (and possibly his entire family) is wiped out?

Surely some pundit in the future will do a study of music on the
Sopranos. There was a rerun playing last night, and over the credits, I
heard a song by X. Whoever was in charge of the music on that show
really knew his stuff. That's why the choice of Journey is so interesting.

David Chase handpicks all the music for all the shows. He's much more
diverse than I would have thought.

He often requested Steve Van Zandt's advice on the set, as Silvio was
Little Steven's day job.

In season 5, Christopher was late and Silvio complained. Chris replied
that "the turnpike was jammed with broken heroes on a last-chance power
drive," quoting of course lyrics from "Born To Run".

If I remember well, Bob Dylan was one of the only cases of music
recorded specifically for the show. Chase picked existing music, there
were some remixes made for the soundtrack but Bob's cover of Dean
Martin's "Return To Me" was recorded on purpose. Apart from Dominic
Chianese (Uncle Junior) who sang during a season finale, I don't know
any other case.

the only "sopranos" show I watched in full was the finale... I loved
the car scene... they must have played the song for at least 2 or 3
minutes, which I'm pretty sure is not very common on tv... and what a
great song... the lyrics are still very relevent... I try to remember
to and keep it in my mind to not forget "that it is not he or she or
them or it" that I belong to...
