I had been planning my compilation of songs about Luck before Bob's
theme show on the same topic, honest, and naturally I think mine is
better. Trouble is, I have a feeling that only a few of these Luck songs
are memorable, and too many are kind of mediocre. I would appreciate any
help or suggestions from the kind people in rmd. That is, everyone but
poisoned rose. I certainly don't want any of his prog rock crap suggestions.

STILL whining about prog, I see. Pitiful. How many threads is it,
now? 10 or so?

I have 42 Luck/Lucky songs which haven't been named yet. Only one of
them is by a prog act, but most of the others have possible appeal
to people under 50 years old who DON'T judge all music by a
'50s/'60s jukebox-single yardstick. So, you wouldn't like those
songs.

Poisoned rose, get the fuck away from my Lucky Songs post. We don't want
to hear about your prog Luck songs, and we especially don't want to hear
about your 42 non-prog Luck songs. This comp is going to have a
disclaimer on it - No Songs from poisoned rose.

Whew, you're ridiculous.

This over-the-top, childish flame does much to support that your
snit about me is indeed centered on your moronic mix CDs, rather
than anything having to do with a musical genre which you don't even
know well enough to have strong feelings about.

But I'll give you a timely list of songs, anyway.

The Mothers of Invention-The Idiot Bastard Son
The Loud Family-Idiot Son
The Fall-Idiot Walk Out
The Fall-Idiot Joy Showland
Meat Puppets-I'm a Mindless Idiot
Volcano Suns-Village Idiot
Wondermints-Global Village Idiot
Nick Cave-Idiot Prayer
Bob Dylan-Idiot Wind

Enjoy.

Jeez, poisoned rose, no wonder you don't understand my theme compilation
cds. You have such awful musical taste, you don't seem to even know
about the The Kinks' Jack the Idiot Dunce. I wouldn't expect you to
know anything about Ron Sexsmith, but perhaps his finest, wisest song,
is The Idiot Boy. Graham Parker and Old 97s also have idiot songs.

Kinks, Sexsmith, Parker, Old 97s...the same old miniscule range of
interests. Just gimme those nostalgic, straightahead, three-minute
jukebox tunes....

And why wouldn't you expect me to know anything about Sexsmith?
You're well aware that my knowledge of music of the past 20 years or
so runs rings, rings and rings around your own.

You don't strike me as the kind of person who could appreciate Ron Sexsmith

THE IDIOT BOY
God so loved the idiot boy
He gave him a pair of eyes to explore
Gave him a pair of hands to destroy
Any good thing that he found

He said ”Put this kid in a candy store.
Let him run around until he drops"
Then just like a bull in a china shop
Everything came crashing down

God so loved the idiot boy
That he filled the night with dreams
Til dusty sunlight beams
Danced upon the floor

Gave him a solo in the choir
Where songs of wild desire
Were all his voice was for
Lo lo lo lo lo lo

God so loved the idiot world
He gave it his only son to kick around
That was long ago in another town
(It could use a good laugh now)

God so loved the idiot world
Gave him a solo in the choir
Where songs of wild desire
Were all his voice was for
Lo lo lo lo lo lo

God so loved the idiot boy
He gave him coffee grounds in a paper cup
And a reason everyday to keep getting up
In a world that drags you down

God so loved the idiot boy

His music is too far on the sleepy side for me, but he has some
talent with words.

PS There is no "kind" of person who likes Ron Sexsmith.

How pathetic, poisoned rose. Look at you trolling for insults so that
you can carry on a flame response for another 30 posts and thus take
over my Lucky Songs thread. What is it you have against my compilations
anyway?

But let me spell it out for you. Sexsmiths' Idiot Boy is the greatest
Idiot song ever written. To leave it out of a list of Idiot songs is
tantamount to compiling a list of songs about the body parts of bees and
leaving out Richard Thompson's Beeswing.

There are people in rmd who like Bob Dylan for his music and not his
lyrics. The Kinks, like Dylan, are a group famous much more for their
lyrics than their music. The Kink's song, Jack the Idiot Dunce, is not
one of their greatest songs, but all Kinks fans know it, though you
don't seem to.

Let me make a sweeping generalization. You're not into the poetry of a
great song lyric. This might explain how you can tolerate prog rock.

Now, instead of your usual name-calling response, why not leave my Luck
Song thread in peace and attack me in your own thread. Have you ever
actually begun a thread in rmd, or do you just attack other people's?

Another stunningly stupid post, again showing how completely you're
swept up in your delusions of definitive "righteous" tastes. The
only thing I'll give you credit for is acknowledging that you made a
"sweeping generalization" (though this realization mysteriously
didn't stop you for making it). Right, being ambivalent about Ron
Sexsmith means I don't like lyrics in general. Yeah, right. Jeez,
you're silly.

Incidentally, I don't agree that the Kinks are much more famous for
their lyrics than their music (let's all dissect the lyrics of "You
Really Got Me," shall we?).

You must admit that is a good point. Going by 'fame', what are the best
known Kinks songs? The above, 'Lola', and 'Apeman'. Catchy, sure, but
not very deep, lyrically. .

Well, I would concede that "Lola"'s appeal is more about its lyrics
than its melody.

And "Apeman," among the top three best known??

I'm not sure that would even rank in the top 20.

You Really Got Me*
Lola
Waterloo Sunset
All Day and All of the Night*
Tired of Waiting for You*
Stop Your Sobbing*
A Well Respected Man
Dedicated Follower of Fashion
Picture Book* (thanks to all the recent commercial use)
Celluloid Heroes
Come Dancing*
Where Have All the Good Times Gone*
Sunny Afternoon*
Days
Destroyer*
Victoria*
Better Things*
(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman*
....

What do you think?

Also, looking back at the same list, I'd note that plenty of those
songs seem more popular based on music than lyrics. I asterisked
them....

Someone, either you or really real, used 'fame' as a qualifier, which I
took to mean 'well-known'. Not sure how many of those songs you listed
are well-known outside of Kinks fans, other than 'Superman'. Just a
subjective opionion, to be sure.

Well, if chart position is a reliable indicator of recognition,
Billboard says all of these singles charted higher in the States
than "Apeman":

Set Me Free
Who'll Be the Next in Line
Sunny Afternoon
A Well Respected Man
Lola
A Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy
(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman
Come Dancing
Don't Forget to Dance
Do It Again
